Seventeen

I was so ready for my plane to land in San Francisco. I'd made some runs for Evan and built bikes for Paul's Christmas rush, so I'd been able to generate a little income after receiving the second check from CAT 1. The walking around money was a small consolation to losing my grip on my dream of working full-time in the cycling world again, though.

As I exited the plane, my pulse accelerated a notch or two. I didn't look like much, dressed in my worn navy pea coat, jeans and running shoes, and with my hair needing a cut, but oh well. I slowed momentarily as I looked from left to right for Annie. Our eyes locked and her face lit up like the Christmas tree we'd trim tonight, while a big smile grew across my face. We hurried toward each other just short of a run. I had my trusty backpack in one hand and a workout bag in the other. I let both fall to the floor as we melted into each other's arms.

My lips brushed against hers, and then I buried my head in her neck. Maybe it was fatigue from the flight, but it was all I could do to keep the tears from falling. "Hey. It's great to see you. I've missed you."

"Oh E.J. honey, I've missed you, too." She gave me a quick squeeze and pulled back to look me in the eye. While her eyes said she was clearly happy to see me, there was another emotion there too--worry. She pointed at the bags. "Grab those. We need to go, and I need your help with something."

"Oh yeah, what's that?"

"Well, duh, you big dope." She elbowed me in the arm. "Like I haven't told you already? I need you to help me trim our Christmas tree."

"Right, sorry." I gave her a little grin and patted my backpack. "I brought a few things to help with that."

"Really? Do tell."

"After you mentioned trimming the tree the other night, I dug some of the family's ornaments out of storage. I kept some after Mom died, ones that I just couldn't part with, and brought a few with me. I hope you don't mind."

"Of course I don't mind." She wrapped her arm around mine as she led the way out of the airport. "I can't wait to see them."

I wasn't a lot of fun on the drive to Annie's house. This was a bittersweet time for me. My first Christmas without family just added salt to my wound over losing the CAT 1 job. At least I'd been too busy to spend the last few weeks sulking.

"Hey." She elbowed me in the arm. "Are you all right?"

I ran my fingers through my hair. "Getting there. Better now that I get to see you in person." I looked out the window for a while. "This is just...Well, let's just say this month's been a challenge."

"I know you miss your parents, E.J., please believe me when I say I understand.
